SUMMARY:Friday Program - The Mother Church's First Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What did they talk about at the first few Mother Church Annual Meetings? Our dive into Reading Room resources this week will take us to a period when things were really hopping\, including: a new order of church services\, the building of The Mother Church\, a change in Friday meetings (yes\, Friday) to “experience meetings\,” and sermons from a new Pastor\, the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. We’ll consult Christian Science Journals from the 1890s\, at least two books\, and The Mary Baker Eddy Library website.

SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: FINDING TRUST IN A CHANGING WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lesley Pitts. \nLesley Pitts\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Finding trust in a changing world\,” on May 21 at 7 p.m. at Seattle Unity\, 200 8th Avenue N.\, Seattle. \nThe talk will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and hosted by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Seattle. \n“Finding a spiritual basis of trust enables us to turn to a divine presence whenever we need it\,” says Lesley. “The love\, goodness\, and intelligence of God never change and are always available. The more we discover of God’s love and care for us\, the more we can confidently turn to this divine presence and find our lives transformed and healed – and our families\, communities\, and the whole world benefit\, too. Anyone can learn how to lean into God’s trustworthiness.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Pitts will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nPitts will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties. \nAbout Lesley Pitts \nIt was during high school that the direction of Lesley’s life changed. Although she was raised as a Christian Scientist\, it wasn’t until she experienced the joy of helping someone during a youth club outing that Lesley finally understood what it took to love unselfishly. This set her on a new path. She became aware that nursing qualities of willing service\, patience\, gentleness\, and compassion were expressed all around her as she grew up and that she wanted to live them\, too. They’ve woven themselves into every activity she has undertaken since then. \nFor example\, Lesley served as a Christian Science nurse for more than 30 years\, mostly in the United Kingdom. This work brought her to Boston in the United States to work in the Christian Science Nursing Activities department. Later\, she was part of the team that established The Mary Baker Eddy Library. Her nursing qualities were put to good use in organizing and caring for its collections–shared with the public for the first time. She served as Executive Manager and President of the Library for six years. \nWorking at the Library and becoming more familiar with Eddy’s remarkable accomplishments as the founder of a religious movement increased Lesley’s desire to better practice Christian Science in her own life and help others through her healing practice and lecturing. \nLesley believes that her unusual career path illustrates the idea that following God’s lead is a more trustworthy foundation for living than relying on society’s expectations or other people’s opinions. \nTop photo by Sylvain Mauroux on Unsplash

SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: NEVER ALONE: HOW SPIRITUAL IDEAS WORK IN US
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Melanie Wahlberg. \nMelanie Wahlberg\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Never Alone: How spiritual ideas work in us\,” on May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Christian Sscience Church at 1475 Evergreen Park Dr SW\, in Olympia\, WA. \nThe talk will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, and show how they are available for anyone to understand and experience. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and is sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Olympia. \n“In the middle of difficult circumstances\, it would be so reassuring to feel supported in our efforts for progress\, instead of feeling alone. In this talk\,” says Melanie\, “I discuss what I’ve found helpful in my practice of Christian Science healing: that God loves us deeply\, is an active presence of good in our lives\, and provides fresh ideas about our spiritual nature that wipe away fear and reveal inspired solutions. And I’ll share how this approach has transformed lives\, including a mother and her infant daughter who each experienced healing. With ideas from God working on our behalf this way\, we discover that we’re never truly alone.” \nMelanie will discuss the approach to spirituality and well-being that explains these ideas\, Christian Science\, and share examples of healing from her own life and the lives of others. She will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that anyone can prove its effectiveness for themselves. The practice is fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nMelanie will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, a mid-nineteenth century woman from New England\, and how she came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have also worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, with healings of physical ills and personal difficulties for themselves and others. \nAbout Melanie Wahlberg \nTwo influences that Melanie will never forget were the Christian Science Sunday School and a mom who turned to prayer and encouraged her to do the same. These influences showed her something of the reliability of God and spiritual inspiration\, and trusting this helped her find her way growing up. Significant healing experiences with relationship and food issues\, and violence in the community\, were also unforgettable. From this\, Melanie got an idea of the many ways that Christian Science can transform lives. \nAfter finishing a doctorate in mathematics\, Melanie became a college professor and truly enjoyed teaching. She found that teaching was less about telling students something than facilitating the students’ discoveries of new concepts. There was nothing better than witnessing a reluctant student realize that a previously mystifying concept was actually within reach to anyone. \nBut the higher promise of Christian Science beckoned her to help people redeem and uplift their lives in a fuller way. When students came to her office for help with calculus\, Melanie and her students often found themselves talking about the joy and excitement of growing spirituality.  After just two years at the college\, Melanie resigned from her position and began accepting calls as a Christian Science practitioner. She wrote articles for the Christian Science periodicals\, was a frequent guest on Sentinel radio\, and began advertising her practice in The Christian Science Journal in 2004. She and her husband also started a family. \nMelanie loves working from her home office in the Los Angeles area. She likes to see lives transformed by the healing ideas of Christian Science\, where we ourselves are helped and\, at the same time\, find we can help others. Her life as a mom has a lot of the same focus. And whether the spiritual ideas apply to health issues\, school\, social lives\, or sports\, her three kids push her to “keep it real.” \nTop photo by Christelle Hayek on Unsplash

SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: FINDING JOY\, HEALTH\, HOPE FOR ALL
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Steven Salt. \nSometimes we can feel that joy seems hard to find — and seems even harder to keep! But what if joy is really fundamental to our nature? What if it is something all of us have permanently? \nChristian Science teacher and lecturer Steve Salt asks\, “What if we could find the good in life for which our hearts yearn is invulnerable to surrounding events\, that it’s never ‘on the line’ for any reason\, actually? If there was a way to trust that\, and to prove it\, that would give us a compelling reason to have hope. Even a reason for unshakeable joy. Christian Science explains the incredible good endowed on us by God — a good all of us deserve and can even expect — all the time.” \nSteve will present his talk\, “Finding joy\, health\, hope for all\,” on Sunday\, May 19\, at 2 p.m. at the Christian Science Church at 9125 Gravelly Lake Dr. SW\, Lakewood\, WA.. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Lakewood. \nSteve will share how he was healed of mental darkness\, and subsequently regained his sense of joy. Through praying with ideas from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy\, he was transformed — uplifted by a better understanding of joy as a quality of an all-present\, all-loving God. \nHe will also share other healings\, thoughts on identity\, prayer\, and what Jesus taught about joy. And he’ll describe Mary Baker Eddy’s life. She founded Christian Science\, wrote Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, and modeled a prayerful approach to life\, through good happenings and bad\, health and sickness\, security and poverty\, safety and homelessness — prevailing over all of these obstacles\, and helping many others along the way. \nAbout Steven Salt \nExploring how things work\, discovering dynamic relationships\, observing unapparent connections\, and applying the knowledge gained to make sense of it all: this has been the impulse of Steve’s life. \nAs a youngster he designed\, engineered\, and built cities of cardboard\, electrified them\, and served as city manager to imaginary families and workers. This was followed by more complex projects that included a balsa wood suspension bridge and a working model of a three-story elevator. Oh\, and model rockets. He launched lots of rockets into the sky. Steve likes learning by doing. \nParallel to this education was a deeper plunge into the workings of life through attending Christian Science Sunday School\, where he learned the fundamentals of his relationship to God and other people. Steve gained a broader\, more spiritual and practical sense of the Bible along with the framework in which to understand and value the true nature of things. \nAfter earning a degree in education at Ohio University\, he went into the family hardware business helping people problem-solve the household challenges they were facing. Steve’s commitment to church continued to grow as he served in various capacities. Most importantly\, he was gaining a better conception of God’s ever-presence through the Christian Science that brings this reality into focus. \nEventually\, Steve was led to the full-time\, public practice of Christian Science where he could apply its teachings to daily experiences and secure a stable sense of well-being for those in need of prayerful support. \nHe enjoyed fulfilling the duties of Christian Science Committee on Publication for Ohio for 15 years. This allowed him to connect with editors\, reporters\, and government officials at the local\, state\, and national levels\, ensuring the availability of accurate information about Christian Science. Steve regularly met with ecumenical and interfaith leaders\, and gave talks with interfaith groups and comparative religion classes. He wrote for national websites\, blogs\, newspapers\, and magazines in this capacity. \nSteve is married to Crystal\, his high school sweetheart. They have two sons and three grandchildren. They all bring him joy. \nPhoto at top by Molnár Bálint on Unsplash

SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: FINDING WHERE GOD IS SEEN AND FELT — WHAT’S CHURCH GOT TO DO WITH IT?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Emra Farkas. \nEmra Farkas\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Finding where God is seen and felt – what’s church got to do with it?” on Thursday\, May 9\, at 7 p.m. at Richland Community Center\, 500 Amon Park Drive\, Richland\, WA\, \nThe talk will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and hosted by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Pasco. \n“A new kind of thinking is needed to recognize that God’s goodness and love are actually here and tangible to all humanity everywhere\,” says Emra. “The idea of ‘church’ can shift from being a physical building\, a set time on a particular day\, or an assembly of perfect humans (does that even exist??)\, to that of being what God builds in our lives every moment through us responding to Christ Jesus’ message of God’s all-powerful love.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Emra will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nEmra will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. \nAbout Emra Farkas \nThe most important influences on Emra’s life were her mother\, who taught her to pray when confronted with difficulties\, and her Christian Science Sunday School. In her teens\, when a teacher asked her to speak to a social studies class about her religion\, she found the joy that comes from sharing what she understood and had experienced of Mary Baker Eddy’s discovery. She was asked back each year and was always moved by the way students who were skeptical about the subject became interested after hearing her accounts of spiritual healing–her healings of a severed thumb\, tonsilitis\, swimmer’s ear\, bullying\, and other difficulties. \nHowever\, during college and graduate school she drifted away from church. Her degrees were in Fine Arts and after school she worked for galleries and museums in New York City. Her interest in finding spiritual answers to life’s challenges was rekindled\, and she explored a variety of spiritual disciplines in search of answers. This hands-on study of comparative religion helped her understand the universality of the search for spiritual truth but left her with unanswered questions. \nShe and her husband moved to Taos\, New Mexico\, where she enjoyed a career in music performance and started a family. After some years of poor health\, a sudden spiritual insight led her back to Christian Science and an instantaneous healing of multiple chronic illnesses. This inspired a deeper study of Eddy’s writings which then led to returning to church\, taking Christian Science class instruction (a two-week intensive course of study) and shortly after\, becoming a full-time Christian Science practitioner.  She says there is nothing more satisfying than seeing divine Truth and Love transform lives and bring healing. She feels deeply blessed to practice and teach Christian Science\, contribute to the Christian Science periodicals\, serve her branch church\, and serve as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: MOVING PAST FEAR - TO HEALING
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lisa Troseth. \nLisa Troseth\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Moving past fear – to healing\,” on May 5 at 1 p.m.\, at First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Aberdeen\, at 2201 Simpson Ave\, Aberdeen\, WA. \nThe talk will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Aberdeen\, WA. \n“Fear can be overcome and even healed in our lives by discovering the strong connection and relationship we have to something bigger than ourselves—God\,” says Lisa. “By learning to lean and rely on this greater\, higher good\, we can feel moved to love beyond ourselves—and this frees us from fear and so much more.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Lisa will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nLisa will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. She wasn’t sure where she was headed\, but she was praying to be of service to humanity. That’s when it occurred to her: If we’re motivated by love in whatever we’re doing\, even if our efforts seem small on the surface\, then we’ll be living in accord with a power that genuinely makes a difference—the power of God\, which the Bible says is Love itself. \nAt the time\, she had begun to really open her heart to God and was learning from the study of Christian Science that the nature of our divine Creator is infinitely loving and we’re designed to express God’s love in beautiful and unique ways. It’s like each of us\, including our daily endeavors\, are made to be an artistic tapestry of divine Love. \nThis idea still inspires her each day to see and treat everyone she meets with love\, to acknowledge their God-derived value\, beauty\, and uniqueness. Christian Science has shown Lisa how letting a truer sense of God’s all-defining love govern how we interact and genuinely care for each other actually leads the way to useful ideas and purposeful action\, and improves society as a whole. Since her twenties\, Lisa has seen how these views have led her and others in a variety of fruitful endeavors that bring genuine healing where it’s needed most. \nAlong the way\, Lisa has worked with educational non-profits\, contributed to community art events\, participated in interfaith programs\, and served as a Christian Science nurse. She is now in the full-time healing ministry as a Christian Science practitioner\, teacher\, and lecturer.

\nChristian Science teacher and lecturer Steve Salt says\, “What if we could find the good in life for which our hearts yearn is invulnerable to surrounding events\, that it’s never ‘on the line’ for any reason\, actually? If there was a way to trust that\, and to prove it\, that would give us a compelling reason to have hope. Even a reason for unshakeable joy. Christian Science explains the incredible good endowed on us by God — a good all of us deserve and can even expect — all the time.” \nSteve will present his talk\, “Finding joy\, health\, hope for all\,” on Sunday\, April 28\, at 3 p.m. He will speak at the Christian Science Church at 89 NE Park Street in Chehalis\, WA. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Chehalis.

SUMMARY:In-Person lecture and livestream: FINDING JOY\, HEALTH\, HOPE FOR ALL
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Steven Salt. \nSometimes we can feel that joy seems hard to find — and seems even harder to keep! But what if joy is really fundamental to our nature? What if it is something all of us have permanently? \nChristian Science teacher and lecturer Steve Salt says\, “What if we could find the good in life for which our hearts yearn is invulnerable to surrounding events\, that it’s never ‘on the line’ for any reason\, actually? If there was a way to trust that\, and to prove it\, that would give us a compelling reason to have hope. Even a reason for unshakeable joy. Christian Science explains the incredible good endowed on us by God — a good all of us deserve and can even expect — all the time.” \nSteve will present his talk\, “Finding joy\, health\, hope for all\,” on Saturday\, April 27\, at 7 p.m. He will speak at the Kent Commons Community Center\, 525 4th Avenue N.\, in Kent\, WA. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and sponsored by\nFirst Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Kent. https://christiansciencekent.org/ \nThe lecture also will be livestreamed on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83727884653\nMeeting ID: 837 2788 4653\nOne tap mobile: +12532158782\,\,83727884653# US \nSteve will share how he was healed of mental darkness\, and subsequently regained his sense of joy. \nAbout Steven Salt \n\n  \nExploring how things work\, discovering dynamic relationships\, observing unapparent connections\, and applying the knowledge gained to make sense of it all: this has been the impulse of Steve’s life. SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: WHY EVERYONE IS NEEDED
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: James Shepherd. \nJames Shepherd’s talk — “Why Everyone is Needed” — will focus on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Oak Harbor\, and Christian Science Society\, South Whidbey. \n“I love exploring the nature of God\, infinite Love\, as the only cause\, and our unbreakable connection to God as God’s offspring\,” says James. “This connection gives us our purpose and worth by seeing everyone from a more God-like\, or spiritual\, point of view. I’ve experienced how this has an impact on my life and on the lives of others.” \nSharing examples of healing from his own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, James will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nJames will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. \nAbout James Shepherd \nJames has been a Christian Science practitioner for many years\, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. He travels from his home base in Eugene\, Oregon\, to speak to audiences as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. \nJames has seen the healing effects of God’s love since he was a youngster\, romping through the woods around his home with his three brothers. They had their share of scrapes and bruises which were quickly healed through prayer. On the rare occasions they felt sick\, they relied on Christian Science for quick healings. \nIn high school his family moved to a ranch where they had cattle\, horses\, sheep\, pigs\, chickens\, and turkeys. He graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture\, but realized that serving as a Christian Science healer was the best way he could serve others. He left the ranch and took up the full-time work of helping others find healing through prayer. Thirty years later\, he still loves this work as much as ever. \nOver the years\, James has enjoyed being active in many roles in his local Church of Christ\, Scientist\, and has worked at summer camps for Christian Scientists and their friends. He has also shared the message of Love’s transforming power in prison settings and youth detention centers. When his four children were little\, he coached their sports programs. He finds other ways to help his community\, such as by volunteering at a neighborhood church to help cook a free breakfast for those in need. \nJames loves spending time with his family and doing any outdoor activity. But his greatest joy will always be to find\, and to help others find\, a more tangible sense of God’s love for everyone and how that improves every aspect of our lives. \nMain photo by Naassom Azevedo on Unsplash
