DESCRIPTION:Moving Past Fear to Healing\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Lisa Troseth\nCome listen on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science.\nLisa Troseth\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Moving Past Fear – to Healing\,” on May 3 at 1 p.m.\, at First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Mount Vernon\, at 725 N. 6th Street. \n“Fear can be overcome and even healed in our lives by discovering the strong connection and relationship we have to something bigger than ourselves—God\,” says Lisa. “By learning to lean and rely on this greater\, higher good\, we can feel moved to love beyond ourselves—and this frees us from fear and so much more.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Lisa will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nLisa will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties. \nThe talk is free\, open to the community\, and sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Mount Vernon\, WA. \nAbout Lisa Troseth\n \nWhat should I do with my life?” Lisa often wondered during her early twenties. She wasn’t sure where she was headed\, but she was praying to be of service to humanity. That’s when it occurred to her: If we’re motivated by love in whatever we’re doing\, even if our efforts seem small on the surface\, then we’ll be living in accord with a power that genuinely makes a difference—the power of God\, which the Bible says is Love itself. \nAt the time\, she had begun to really open her heart to God and was learning from the study of Christian Science that the nature of our divine Creator is infinitely loving and we’re designed to express God’s love in beautiful and unique ways. It’s like each of us\, including our daily endeavors\, are made to be an artistic tapestry of divine Love. \nThis idea still inspires her each day to see and treat everyone she meets with love\, to acknowledge their God-derived value\, beauty\, and uniqueness. Christian Science has shown Lisa how letting a truer sense of God’s all-defining love govern how we interact and genuinely care for each other actually leads the way to useful ideas and purposeful action\, and improves society as a whole. Since her twenties\, Lisa has seen how these views have led her and others in a variety of fruitful endeavors that bring genuine healing where it’s needed most. \nAlong the way\, Lisa has worked with educational non-profits\, contributed to community art events\, participated in interfaith programs\, and served as a Christian Science nurse. SUMMARY:In-Person & Online lecture: THE JOY OF BEGINNING WITH GOD
DESCRIPTION:The Joy of Beginning with God\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Mark McCurties\nThe very first verse of the Bible in the chapter Genesis offers the most wonderful news: “In the beginning\, God created the heaven and the earth.” Part of what this glorious verse tells us is that in reality\, everything and everyone begins with God. In other words\, God is the only cause and the only creator\, and God is causing good and right developments for each one of us.\nMary Baker Eddy\, the woman who founded the Christian Science church\, knew that this subject of causation\, cause and effect\, might just be the most important discussion of our time. In fact\, she boldly stated that making progress in the world depends on understanding cause and effect in the right way. She wrote: “Spiritual causation is the one question to be considered\, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress.” (Science and Health p. 170:22–24) \nTo that point\, perhaps you’ve noticed that the world is talking nonstop about causation right now. \nWhat causes disease? What causes inflation? What causes crime? What causes natural disasters? etc. However\, it’s helpful to note that these conversations are taking place from the point of view of physical causation\, physical or material causes and effects. \nIn this lecture\, I’m going to take a different approach. I’d like to talk about causation\, from a spiritual point of view. In other words\, what is God causing? What kind of effects does God’s causative power produce? The Bible promises that God is causing only good. So in this lecture\, I will explore how a better understanding of the good that God forever causes\, can help us to experience more of that goodness in the form of health\, peace\, and safety for our world. In the beginning\, from the beginning\, and without beginning\, God is causing good. As loved children of God\, we each have a divine right to feel the effect of that divine goodness in our daily lives. I invite you then\, to come learn more about the joy of beginning with God! \nAbout Mark McCurties\n \nEver since he was a little boy\, Mark had a deep love for the Bible. When he read about men and women in the Bible overcoming hatred\, famine\, war\, physical disease\, and other hardships\, their triumphs inspired him. It didn’t matter what the odds were\, or what conditions they faced\, individuals in the Bible seemed to flourish in adversity based on one common theme: their deep love for God. \nGrowing up in a Christian Science household\, there was another book that Mark loved to read daily: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures written by Mary Baker Eddy. The very purpose of her book is to help unlock and reveal the deeper divine meaning and inspiration of the Bible. Together the Bible and Science and Health point to the practical healing and saving power of God and its present availability for all mankind. Mark knew that someday he wanted to share that healing message with the world. \nAs he grew into adulthood\, experiences in the field of education as a summer camp director\, outdoor educator\, athletics coach\, and resident counselor all helped to develop his understanding and practice of Christian Science. While working with young people\, Mark had multiple opportunities to witness God’s healing power. These examples proved to him that the healing power of the Christ is just as alive and relevant today as for the men and women of the Bible. DESCRIPTION:The Joy of Beginning with God\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Mark McCurties\nThe very first verse of the Bible in the chapter Genesis offers the most wonderful news: “In the beginning\, God created the heaven and the earth.” Part of what this glorious verse tells us is that in reality\, everything and everyone begins with God. In other words\, God is the only cause and the only creator\, and God is causing good and right developments for each one of us.\nMary Baker Eddy\, the woman who founded the Christian Science church\, knew that this subject of causation\, cause and effect\, might just be the most important discussion of our time. In fact\, she boldly stated that making progress in the world depends on understanding cause and effect in the right way. She wrote: “Spiritual causation is the one question to be considered\, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress.” (Science and Health p. 170:22–24) \nTo that point\, perhaps you’ve noticed that the world is talking nonstop about causation right now. \nWhat causes disease? What causes inflation? What causes crime? What causes natural disasters? etc. However\, it’s helpful to note that these conversations are taking place from the point of view of physical causation\, physical or material causes and effects. \nIn this lecture\, I’m going to take a different approach. I’d like to talk about causation\, from a spiritual point of view. In other words\, what is God causing? What kind of effects does God’s causative power produce? The Bible promises that God is causing only good. So in this lecture\, I will explore how a better understanding of the good that God forever causes\, can help us to experience more of that goodness in the form of health\, peace\, and safety for our world. In the beginning\, from the beginning\, and without beginning\, God is causing good. As loved children of God\, we each have a divine right to feel the effect of that divine goodness in our daily lives. I invite you then\, to come learn more about the joy of beginning with God! \nAbout Mark McCurties\n \nEver since he was a little boy\, Mark had a deep love for the Bible. When he read about men and women in the Bible overcoming hatred\, famine\, war\, physical disease\, and other hardships\, their triumphs inspired him. It didn’t matter what the odds were\, or what conditions they faced\, individuals in the Bible seemed to flourish in adversity based on one common theme: their deep love for God. \nGrowing up in a Christian Science household\, there was another book that Mark loved to read daily: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures written by Mary Baker Eddy. The very purpose of her book is to help unlock and reveal the deeper divine meaning and inspiration of the Bible. Together the Bible and Science and Health point to the practical healing and saving power of God and its present availability for all mankind. Mark knew that someday he wanted to share that healing message with the world. \nAs he grew into adulthood\, experiences in the field of education as a summer camp director\, outdoor educator\, athletics coach\, and resident counselor all helped to develop his understanding and practice of Christian Science. While working with young people\, Mark had multiple opportunities to witness God’s healing power. These examples proved to him that the healing power of the Christ is just as alive and relevant today as for the men and women of the Bible. DESCRIPTION:Humility that “Overcomes the World”\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Mark McCurties\nOne of the central themes of Christ Jesus’ ministry was to teach and show that the power of God’s love can help us to overcome the various injustices that we face in the world.\nIn fact\, Jesus fully proved the power of God’s might. He healed all kinds of disease\, transformed the worst types of behavior\, he stopped violent acts from occurring\, and he forgave his enemies in order to save them\, proving hatred to be powerless in the face of divine Love. Ultimately\, Jesus showed that the power of God’s love doesn’t just help us to cope with the ills of the world; it helps us to conquer them. \nYet\, for all the remarkable healing work that Jesus did\, he never once took the credit. Instead he always gave the glory and honor to God\, our Father in heaven. So sincere was Jesus in his expression of humility that he even said\, “I can of my own self do nothing” (John 5:30). In other words\, Christ Jesus\, the Son of God\, who overcame all the ugliness that the world could throw at him\, said (in essence)\, the good that I do isn’t personal to me; it’s the Father working through me. \nMary Baker Eddy\, the woman who founded the Christian Science church\, perceived the powerful impact that Jesus’ humility had on his healing and saving mission. She wrote\, “Great charity and humility is necessary in this work of healing. The loving patience of Jesus\, we must strive to emulate.” (Miscellaneous Writings 7:7-9) \nIn this lecture\, we will discuss how learning to follow the example of Christ Jesus\, particularly his profound display of humility\, can empower each one of us to heal and to overcome the hard problems that we face. We will discuss what true humility is\, how it links us to God\, and by extension\, how it connects us with God’s healing and saving laws. I’ve experienced how this has an impact on my life and on the lives of others.” Finding this new sense of our connection to God helps us bring healing to difficult world problems like political divisions and social inequality. Each one of us is connected to God. No one is left out. James’s lecture discusses what our purpose is\, where our worth comes from\, and shares examples of how seeing ourselves and others as God sees us gives us a spiritual perspective that heals ourselves and our world. \nJoin us for James’ talk\, “Why Everyone is Needed?” on Thursday May 8\, in Bothell\, WA. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and hosted by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Bothell at the Christian Science Church\, 18301 102nd Ave NE\nBothell\, WA\, at 7:30 PM. \nSharing examples of healing from his own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Shepherd will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nShepherd will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nAbout James Shepherd\nGod’s love is for everyone\, and a Christian Science lecture is a perfect setting to learn about God’s love and the healing that it brings. \nJames has seen the healing effects of God’s love since he was a youngster\, romping through the woods around his home with his three brothers. They had their share of scrapes and bruises which were quickly healed through prayer. On the rare occasions they felt sick\, they relied on Christian Science for quick healings. \nIn high school his family moved to a ranch where they had cattle\, horses\, sheep\, pigs\, chickens\, and turkeys. He graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture\, but realized that serving as a Christian Science healer was the best way he could serve others. He left the ranch and took up the full-time work of helping others find healing through prayer. Thirty years later\, he still loves this work as much as ever. \nOver the years\, James has enjoyed being active in many roles in his local Church of Christ\, Scientist\, and has worked at summer camps for Christian Scientists and their friends. He has also shared the message of Love’s transforming power in prison settings and youth detention centers. When his four children were little\, he coached their sports programs. He finds other ways to help his community\, such as by volunteering at a neighborhood church to help cook a free breakfast for those in need. \nJames loves spending time with his family and doing any outdoor activity. I’ve lectured to the public in a variety of settings and venues\, from prisons to professional health care audiences and everything in between. But at the same time\, He (never She) could be distant\, unknowable\, and judgmental. He was loving\, but could punish us harshly. He sent sunshine and babies\, but also storms\, wars\, and disease\,” explains Giulia Nesi Tetreau.\nShe continues\, “Longing for meaningful connection with the divine\, this two-sided God was no comfort to me as I grew older. I wanted to feel unconditional love\, that God would be a reliable help no matter what I was dealing with or going through. And I didn’t just want to know about God. I wanted to experience God. \nMy yearning was actually part of what I understand to be a larger spiritual revolution. Worldwide\, across cultures\, people are seeking a truer sense of Deity. Spirit\, God (or whatever we call our Source) is impelling us all toward a life that’s bigger and deeper than what we perceive with the five senses. \nThis impulsion led me to Christian Science\, which\, based on the life and teachings of Christ Jesus\, explains that God is pure Love\, and the source of all good feminine as well as masculine qualities. It also teaches that we all are God’s beloved children – always\, in all conditions – and that what’s true and enduring is the good in our nature. These are and continue to be revolutionary concepts. So revolutionary that\, as they change our viewpoints about God and ourselves\, we can experience healing from disease and suffering as Jesus showed us. \nHere’s an example. A friend of mine had experienced deep feelings of sadness\, loneliness and depression – beginning in middle school and persisting through high school. He even attempted suicide. \nDuring this time he was convinced that God did not exist and that the power of the universe was crushing him. But he was mentally conflicted too – he also felt his only hope was in the power of God. \nHe was familiar with Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, and decided to read it through entirely because he felt his only hope and help would be in consciously understanding more about God. So he decided to read through Science and Health cover to cover\, which he did over a dozen times over the next few years. \nA growing sense of hope\, felt from reading the spiritual ideas on every page\, was persistently replacing thoughts and feelings of despair and depression. One night\, he had a profound spiritual moment that made this fact clear: The truth of his spiritual being is his oneness\, his inseparability with God\, and that this truth is a rock to stand on! \nMy friend said it was like he was suddenly released from being held underwater! During the next few weeks he had a tangible sense of the presence of Love\, embracing everything and everyone. But the right kind of vision (hint: it’s spiritual) allows us to discern what is actually important. Christian Science reveals what is essential\, brings solutions\, and enables us to live God-impelled lives that bless our families and communities.\nAbout Nicole Virgil\nNicole’s father was a freelance church organist\, and her parents attended services at many different Christian churches in New England. Her mom had been on a years-long search to find out how to practice Christian healing just as Jesus did\, and when she started attending Christian Science church services\, she found what she was looking for. As a result\, Nicole was raised in Christian Science\, and developed a deep desire for an intimate relationship with God. \nNicole studied Christian Science with her mom and music with her dad\, and found that each discipline complemented the other. Christian Science healed performance anxiety\, while learning music honed the skills she needed for spiritual practice — skills such as intuition\, listening\, patience and diligence. \nThroughout her life\, Christian Science and music have always overlapped. After studying opera at music school\, she took her one-woman opera review program (That Can’t Be Opera!) on the road\, educating audiences about opera by singing Mozart\, Puccini and Menotti. \nChristian Science guided her through this entrepreneurial endeavor\, just as it led her to start soloing in churches as a teenager (which is something she still loves to do!).
