DESCRIPTION:Moving Past Fear to Healing\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Lisa Troseth\nCome listen on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science.\nLisa Troseth\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Moving Past Fear – to Healing\,” on May 3 at 1 p.m.\, at First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Mount Vernon\, at 725 N. 6th Street. \n“Fear can be overcome and even healed in our lives by discovering the strong connection and relationship we have to something bigger than ourselves—God\,” says Lisa. “By learning to lean and rely on this greater\, higher good\, we can feel moved to love beyond ourselves—and this frees us from fear and so much more.” \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Lisa will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nLisa will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties. \nThe talk is free\, open to the community\, and sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Mount Vernon\, WA. \nAbout Lisa Troseth\n \nWhat should I do with my life?” Lisa often wondered during her early twenties. She wasn’t sure where she was headed\, but she was praying to be of service to humanity. That’s when it occurred to her: If we’re motivated by love in whatever we’re doing\, even if our efforts seem small on the surface\, then we’ll be living in accord with a power that genuinely makes a difference—the power of God\, which the Bible says is Love itself. \nAt the time\, she had begun to really open her heart to God and was learning from the study of Christian Science that the nature of our divine Creator is infinitely loving and we’re designed to express God’s love in beautiful and unique ways. It’s like each of us\, including our daily endeavors\, are made to be an artistic tapestry of divine Love. \nThis idea still inspires her each day to see and treat everyone she meets with love\, to acknowledge their God-derived value\, beauty\, and uniqueness. Christian Science has shown Lisa how letting a truer sense of God’s all-defining love govern how we interact and genuinely care for each other actually leads the way to useful ideas and purposeful action\, and improves society as a whole. Since her twenties\, Lisa has seen how these views have led her and others in a variety of fruitful endeavors that bring genuine healing where it’s needed most. \nAlong the way\, Lisa has worked with educational non-profits\, contributed to community art events\, participated in interfaith programs\, and served as a Christian Science nurse. DESCRIPTION:The Joy of Beginning with God\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Mark McCurties\nThe very first verse of the Bible in the chapter Genesis offers the most wonderful news: “In the beginning\, God created the heaven and the earth.” Part of what this glorious verse tells us is that in reality\, everything and everyone begins with God. In other words\, God is the only cause and the only creator\, and God is causing good and right developments for each one of us.\nMary Baker Eddy\, the woman who founded the Christian Science church\, knew that this subject of causation\, cause and effect\, might just be the most important discussion of our time. In fact\, she boldly stated that making progress in the world depends on understanding cause and effect in the right way. She wrote: “Spiritual causation is the one question to be considered\, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress.” (Science and Health p. 170:22–24) \nTo that point\, perhaps you’ve noticed that the world is talking nonstop about causation right now. \nWhat causes disease? What causes inflation? What causes crime? What causes natural disasters? etc. However\, it’s helpful to note that these conversations are taking place from the point of view of physical causation\, physical or material causes and effects. \nIn this lecture\, I’m going to take a different approach. I’d like to talk about causation\, from a spiritual point of view. In other words\, what is God causing? What kind of effects does God’s causative power produce? The Bible promises that God is causing only good. So in this lecture\, I will explore how a better understanding of the good that God forever causes\, can help us to experience more of that goodness in the form of health\, peace\, and safety for our world. In the beginning\, from the beginning\, and without beginning\, God is causing good. As loved children of God\, we each have a divine right to feel the effect of that divine goodness in our daily lives. I invite you then\, to come learn more about the joy of beginning with God! \nAbout Mark McCurties\n \nEver since he was a little boy\, Mark had a deep love for the Bible. When he read about men and women in the Bible overcoming hatred\, famine\, war\, physical disease\, and other hardships\, their triumphs inspired him. It didn’t matter what the odds were\, or what conditions they faced\, individuals in the Bible seemed to flourish in adversity based on one common theme: their deep love for God. \nGrowing up in a Christian Science household\, there was another book that Mark loved to read daily: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures written by Mary Baker Eddy. The very purpose of her book is to help unlock and reveal the deeper divine meaning and inspiration of the Bible. Together the Bible and Science and Health point to the practical healing and saving power of God and its present availability for all mankind. Mark knew that someday he wanted to share that healing message with the world. \nAs he grew into adulthood\, experiences in the field of education as a summer camp director\, outdoor educator\, athletics coach\, and resident counselor all helped to develop his understanding and practice of Christian Science. While working with young people\, Mark had multiple opportunities to witness God’s healing power. These examples proved to him that the healing power of the Christ is just as alive and relevant today as for the men and women of the Bible. SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: HUMILITY THAT “OVERCOMES THE WORLD”
DESCRIPTION:Humility that “Overcomes the World”\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Mark McCurties\nOne of the central themes of Christ Jesus’ ministry was to teach and show that the power of God’s love can help us to overcome the various injustices that we face in the world.\nIn fact\, Jesus fully proved the power of God’s might. He healed all kinds of disease\, transformed the worst types of behavior\, he stopped violent acts from occurring\, and he forgave his enemies in order to save them\, proving hatred to be powerless in the face of divine Love. Ultimately\, Jesus showed that the power of God’s love doesn’t just help us to cope with the ills of the world; it helps us to conquer them. \nYet\, for all the remarkable healing work that Jesus did\, he never once took the credit. Instead he always gave the glory and honor to God\, our Father in heaven. So sincere was Jesus in his expression of humility that he even said\, “I can of my own self do nothing” (John 5:30). In other words\, Christ Jesus\, the Son of God\, who overcame all the ugliness that the world could throw at him\, said (in essence)\, the good that I do isn’t personal to me; it’s the Father working through me. \nMary Baker Eddy\, the woman who founded the Christian Science church\, perceived the powerful impact that Jesus’ humility had on his healing and saving mission. She wrote\, “Great charity and humility is necessary in this work of healing. The loving patience of Jesus\, we must strive to emulate.” (Miscellaneous Writings 7:7-9) \nIn this lecture\, we will discuss how learning to follow the example of Christ Jesus\, particularly his profound display of humility\, can empower each one of us to heal and to overcome the hard problems that we face. We will discuss what true humility is\, how it links us to God\, and by extension\, how it connects us with God’s healing and saving laws. DESCRIPTION:Why Everyone is Needed\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby James Shepherd\n“As we learn more about who we are–as God’s thoughtful\, loved creation–our self-worth\, purpose\, physical health\, and relationships are transformed.”\nSo says James Shepherd\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker. “I love exploring the nature of God\, infinite Love\, as the only cause\, and our unbreakable connection to God as God’s offspring\,” he continues. “This connection gives us our purpose and worth by seeing everyone from a more God-like\, or spiritual\, point of view. I’ve experienced how this has an impact on my life and on the lives of others.” Finding this new sense of our connection to God helps us bring healing to difficult world problems like political divisions and social inequality. Each one of us is connected to God. No one is left out. James’s lecture discusses what our purpose is\, where our worth comes from\, and shares examples of how seeing ourselves and others as God sees us gives us a spiritual perspective that heals ourselves and our world. \nJoin us for James’ talk\, “Why Everyone is Needed?” on Thursday May 8\, in Bothell\, WA. They had their share of scrapes and bruises which were quickly healed through prayer. On the rare occasions they felt sick\, they relied on Christian Science for quick healings. \nIn high school his family moved to a ranch where they had cattle\, horses\, sheep\, pigs\, chickens\, and turkeys. He graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture\, but realized that serving as a Christian Science healer was the best way he could serve others. He left the ranch and took up the full-time work of helping others find healing through prayer. Thirty years later\, he still loves this work as much as ever. \nOver the years\, James has enjoyed being active in many roles in his local Church of Christ\, Scientist\, and has worked at summer camps for Christian Scientists and their friends. He has also shared the message of Love’s transforming power in prison settings and youth detention centers. When his four children were little\, he coached their sports programs. He finds other ways to help his community\, such as by volunteering at a neighborhood church to help cook a free breakfast for those in need. \nJames loves spending time with his family and doing any outdoor activity. DESCRIPTION:Come to the Edmonds Christian Science Reading Room on Friday May 9th at 12:30pm to listen to two recorded segments of We Knew Mary Baker Eddy: Vol 1 – reminiscences of early Christian Science practitioner Abigail Dyer Thompson\, and Annie M Knott\, who served the cause of Christian Science as practitioner\, teacher\, lecturer\, associate editor\, and member of the Christian Science Board of Directors\, We’ll also read a short passage from Robert Peel’s Mary Baker Eddy\, The Years of Authority about John Salchow\, who worked for Mrs. Eddy from 1901 to 1910.
