SUMMARY:In-Person lecture: HUMILITY THAT “OVERCOMES THE WORLD”
DESCRIPTION:Humility that “Overcomes the World”\nA FREE Inspirational Talk\nby Mark McCurties\nOne of the central themes of Christ Jesus’ ministry was to teach and show that the power of God’s love can help us to overcome the various injustices that we face in the world.\nIn fact\, Jesus fully proved the power of God’s might. He healed all kinds of disease\, transformed the worst types of behavior\, he stopped violent acts from occurring\, and he forgave his enemies in order to save them\, proving hatred to be powerless in the face of divine Love. Ultimately\, Jesus showed that the power of God’s love doesn’t just help us to cope with the ills of the world; it helps us to conquer them. \nYet\, for all the remarkable healing work that Jesus did\, he never once took the credit. Instead he always gave the glory and honor to God\, our Father in heaven. So sincere was Jesus in his expression of humility that he even said\, “I can of my own self do nothing” (John 5:30). In other words\, Christ Jesus\, the Son of God\, who overcame all the ugliness that the world could throw at him\, said (in essence)\, the good that I do isn’t personal to me; it’s the Father working through me. \nMary Baker Eddy\, the woman who founded the Christian Science church\, perceived the powerful impact that Jesus’ humility had on his healing and saving mission. She wrote\, “Great charity and humility is necessary in this work of healing. The loving patience of Jesus\, we must strive to emulate.” (Miscellaneous Writings 7:7-9) \nIn this lecture\, we will discuss how learning to follow the example of Christ Jesus\, particularly his profound display of humility\, can empower each one of us to heal and to overcome the hard problems that we face. We will discuss what true humility is\, how it links us to God\, and by extension\, how it connects us with God’s healing and saving laws. There is great need for healing in the world today\, and Christ-like humility can help us to meet that demand. \nAbout Mark McCurties\n \nEver since he was a little boy\, Mark had a deep love for the Bible. When he read about men and women in the Bible overcoming hatred\, famine\, war\, physical disease\, and other hardships\, their triumphs inspired him. It didn’t matter what the odds were\, or what conditions they faced\, individuals in the Bible seemed to flourish in adversity based on one common theme: their deep love for God. \nGrowing up in a Christian Science household\, there was another book that Mark loved to read daily: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures written by Mary Baker Eddy. The very purpose of her book is to help unlock and reveal the deeper divine meaning and inspiration of the Bible. Together the Bible and Science and Health point to the practical healing and saving power of God and its present availability for all mankind. Mark knew that someday he wanted to share that healing message with the world. \nAs he grew into adulthood\, experiences in the field of education as a summer camp director\, outdoor educator\, athletics coach\, and resident counselor all helped to develop his understanding and practice of Christian Science. While working with young people\, Mark had multiple opportunities to witness God’s healing power. These examples proved to him that the healing power of the Christ is just as alive and relevant today as for the men and women of the Bible. In 2010\, with a desire to focus solely on healing through prayer\, Mark entered the full-time public practice of Christian Science. \nThis free talk is sponsored by\nThird Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Seattle\, WA.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mary Bothwell. \nMary Bothwell\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, will present her talk\, “Experiencing Heaven Now\,” on April 13 at 4 p.m. at University Heights Center\, 1531 University Way NE\, in Seattle. The talk is free\, open to the community\, and hosted by Third Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Seattle. Child care will be provided at the church across the street (5034 University Way NE). \nThe lecture also will be livestreamed at thirdchurchseattle.org. \n“In college\, I was suddenly hit with a feeling of being disconnected and alone\,” says Mary. “Maybe it was because I was the only female physics major. Maybe it was because my work schedule meant I was seeing less of my friends. Whatever the reason\, I knew that a change in circumstances wouldn’t solve anything. It was at that point that spirituality became of primary importance in helping me find a lasting solution. For me\, spirituality means our connectedness to God and whatever practice we have that helps us recognize that. So perhaps it’s not surprising that one day\, after an insight about God and the ever-presence of God’s love dawned on me\, the disconnect vanished. Since then\, I’ve felt a conviction that divine Love is here for me\, and for everyone. \n“In spite of the hyper-connectedness of social media and technology\, we live in an era in which many are feeling this same disconnect. We all yearn to find meaningful relationships\, or a more lasting connection with peace\, contentment\, even health. In my lecture\, I’ll discuss how anyone can become genuinely aware of God’s presence and experience heaven — harmony\, health\, and happiness — here and now. \n“I’ll also share how the study of the Bible\, and a book that explains the healing relevance of the Bible\, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy\, can open up a new meaning of heaven to each of us. This heaven isn’t a place\, but a tangible feeling of being enveloped in love and spirituality that comes from understanding more about God. We’ll explore the new perspectives that come from this understanding of God — healing perspectives that can resolve all kinds of difficulties\, and transform our lives for good.” \nAbout Mary Bothwell \n\nFrom childhood\, Mary has pursued a quest to understand the universe. Her spiritual education and search began in the Christian Science Sunday School\, where she learned to apply the lessons in the Bible and the Christian Science textbook\, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, to her life. She was especially interested in the spiritual meaning behind what she read. In early adulthood\, Mary learned that Christ Jesus’ declaration\, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand\,” is true for everybody right now\, no matter where they are. She realized that the peace and joy inherent in the kingdom of heaven\, the spiritual universe\, are available to her at all times and under all circumstances. This understanding has carried her through difficult professional situations\, and allowed her to safely travel throughout the world. \nMary earned a Bachelor’s degree in physics from Principia College and an M.B.A. from UCLA. She was employed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for 34 years. During her time at JPL\, she participated in and managed the development of technology and scientific instrumentation for earth\, planetary\, and astrophysics missions. \nNow\, in her work as a Christian Science practitioner\, Mary prays with people of many faiths to achieve healing through prayer as taught by Christ Jesus and described by Mary Baker Eddy in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Various health and emotional issues have been cured\, interpersonal relationships harmonized\, and supply restored. \nIn gratitude for the 18 years of instruction she received in Christian Science Sunday Schools\, she has served most of her adult life as a Sunday School teacher. She loves helping her students understand the Bible’s message and rejoices in their progress as healers and spiritual thinkers. \nMary and her husband Graham live in Pasadena\, California.

DESCRIPTION:Spiritual Discovery – How You Can Better the World\nA Free Christian Science Talk by Tom McElroy\n \nPrayer is about spiritual discovery. It’s about understanding more of what God is and learning to see our lives and the world through the lens of God’s all-good nature. It’s about stripping away surface-level appearances in order to discern what actually IS. Spiritual discovery reveals what is substantial\, lasting\, and powerful — and this leads to healing. What’s the outcome? Progress. Transformation. Wholeness. For anyone. \nJesus modeled a universal way to pray that leads to a greater awareness of the nature of God and of our relation to God.  He showed how turning from fear and preconceived notions to a clearer view of the presence of a God that is Love and Life itself can have a tangible\, healing effect in our lives. Bible accounts indicate that others who followed his example and teachings proved this too. Freedom from injustice\, hunger\, illness\, even incurable disease\, was gained through discovering more of what God is and does. \nPrayer can have a tangible\, healing effect today\, too. Problems related to our personal history and health as well as issues that trouble entire communities are rooted in misperceptions based on surface-level reasoning. Ultimately\, they never change the facts of what’s rooted in the nature of God — what’s genuine\, good\, and reliable. Prayer that leads to this true viewpoint\, one that’s based on spiritual discovery\, results in healing. \nDoes this sound like blind and dumb faith or positive thinking? It’s not—and centuries of tangible\, healing experiences help prove the Science of it. Mary Baker Eddy\, the founder of this approach to Christianity and healing: Christian Science makes clear the timeless\, universal\, and repeatable truths that underpin Jesus’ life and teachings. Eddy’s primary work\, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, explains Christian Science so that anyone can apply it and experience it for themselves. \nCan we better the world? Absolutely. Misperceptions appear on any scale. Just so\, the universal truths at the heart of Christian healing are true on any scale.
